  • An Idea for Google and Cellular Providers

I thought this post about cellular users accessing Google services was very interesting.

Which reminded me of something I've been pondering for the last several days, and am now wondering if my idea wouldn't solve this problem somewhat.

Do you have a cellphone, with no backup of your contact list, and no way to get it off the phone?

Do you have a phone that supports a schedule (check the menu, you might be surprised), but no way of managing it other than by using the phone's cramped interface?

Here's the idea: cellular providers and Google should get their heads together. Google could provide the cellular companies with APIs to allow them to set up their phones to allow you to use your Google Address Book and Google Calendar. The cellular companies charge a small monthly fee to allow your phone unlimited data transfer to/from your Google Account. You get to sync your phone's address book and schedule with your Google Account, and when you're at your computer you can manage that data with a real keyboard and a large screen. Think about what that looks like when you get a new phone - you just plug in your Google Account, and sync. Bingo - your phone list is on your new phone. No hassle.

Wouldn't that be nice? Imagine adding contacts to your cellphone just by adding them to your Google Account! Would you use that if it was available?
