  • Good Thursday

Matthew 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Matthew 26:61 And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.

Matthew 27:40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.

Matthew 27:63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.

Mark 8:31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

Mark 14:58  We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.

Mark 15:29 And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days,

John 2:19-20 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?

Luke 24:21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.

Luke 24:13-35 is the story of Cleopas and a friend who were walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus. Luke 24:21 is the most significant verse in the list above, because it clearly places the crucifixion events on Thursday.

  • Hey love all the references to three days, but how do you account for the references to the sabbath? Isn't that where Good Friday comes from?

  • Thanks for that! Great answer! I've had it explained before and done a little study on it myself. I wanted to give you a little test though, to see how much you've really thought it through. Great job! Thanks!

  • @Carpenterguy - Its unfortunate that those who defined "Good Friday" didn't take the "3 days" comments into consideration. If you accept the idea that Jesus spoke the truth, then you have to figure out how to make the Sabbath comments fit the three days, instead of the other way around.

There are those who are far more learned in this subject than I am, who have stated that on this particular weekend there was an extra sabbath pertaining to one of their feasts, or something like that. I can't quite remember. At any rate, two "sabbath" days in a row. Take note of the comment in John 19:31 "The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away." In addition to the weekly Sabbaths, God had also commanded seven Holy Days or annual Sabbaths (see Leviticus 23), most of which fell on different days of the week. A number of commentaries and Bible helps will tell you that John is here referring to one of these annual Sabbaths rather than the weekly Sabbath.

If you want to say that Jesus was buried on Friday night, then he's really only in the grave for 2 days and nights at most, which you just cannot make work when you take the verses quoted into consideration. The only logical explanation is that there were actually two "sabbath" days the weekend of his crucifixion and resurrection.

    Hope this helps.

  • @Carpenterguy - You're welcome! Funny, I didn't know this was a test. Good check, though. Too often people talk about things in a way that makes them sound like they know what they're talking about, but they don't. Check 'em out. Don't hesitate to check me on anything. The truth is more important than my opinion. :)
