I tried to buy a truck this week.
Tried.
Try one:
I bid on a truck on ebay, and was outbid. However, the reserve price had not been met. I emailed the seller, and told them that if they wanted to try to make a deal they could contact me. They did. I made them an offer I was sure they would refuse. They counter-offered. I stuck to my price. Several phone calls later, they finally accepted, so we made a deal.
That night, I was trying to get a plane ticket and had a terrible time of it. Finally I decided I'm not supposed to get a ticket, and went to bed.
Next morning, I get a call from the dealership. Uh-oh. There's been a mistake. They got VINs crossed up and they can't sell me that truck for the price we agreed on. Ok. Fine. Keep your truck. I'm sticking to my price.
Try two:
Truck auction ends at a time when I wasn't sure I could be at my computer to snipe it. So I set up a snipe in my account on www.auctionsniper.com. I entered my max bid: $15,001.10. It notified me that I couldn't enter a bid over $15,000 because that required ID verification, which had not yet been done on my Ebay account.
Ok, so how do you do that? I went to Ebay, and searched the help. Finally found the link. Filled out the form. Submitted. Uh-oh. My ID won't verify. I don't have an Italian-sound middle-name. Really. I don't. So I had to call the Equi-Fax number. Do I have a business or personal account? Business. Uh-oh. They can't help me with that. I have to talk to Ebay. Here's two Ebay numbers. Call the numbers. All the automated options tell me to click the "Live Help" link on Ebay's home page. Except that thing doesn't work on ANY of my computers. I'm thinking: This is really getting stupid. I told Charles (one of my employees) what was going on, and he tried calling the Ebay number. He started punching random 5-digit extensions - got thrown out of their system twice, but on the third random number, he got somebody! And that Miss Somebody was not happy, and wanted to know HOW WE GOT HER NUMBER?! So I told her. She didn't laugh.
And she couldn't help me. But she had a friend who might be able to, so she sent her an email. BYE.
And I got an email! I went to the link they sent me, filled out another form. Submitted it. Still waiting. And waiting. My ID is still not verified. By now I'm not sure who I really am. Dad? Mom? What's going on here?
Conclusion: I gave up bidding on the truck.
Try three:
Truck ends in 30 minutes. Nice, clean truck. Bid is at $10,000, with a Buy-It-Now of $16,995. I put in a bid of $12,500 4 seconds before auction close. "We're sorry - your bid cannot be accepted because the next bid increment would be higher than the Buy It Now price."
WHAT???
And the auction closed with the final bid at $10,000
STRIKE THREE.
I told my wife that if this was anybody else's story, I would tell them without hesitation that God was against them buying a truck.
I've had three of the strangest roadblocks this week as I tried to buy a truck. What do you think? Is this kind of thing "The Voice of God"?
